TOPIC GUIDE 15 / Publishing & ownership

Domain Names Hosting Decentralized Platform

Protect the entry point separately from the website files. Review registration, DNS authority, renewals, recovery access, and a consistent public URL.

Architecture & tradeoffsPractical next stepsOpen to read

Separate possession of content from control of a name

Keeping every website file does not preserve the domain through which readers find it. Equally, owning the familiar name does not ensure that a referenced release remains available. Plan for both situations instead of placing all recovery responsibility with the hosting operator.

Record the registrant’s administrative process, the DNS service, the browser-facing host or gateway, and the release-retention arrangements. Identify the person responsible for notices and renewals without publishing their private recovery details.

Review a custom domain’s delivery path

DNSLink is one way to map a familiar DNS name to an IPFS or IPNS path. Its documentation separates the mapping from the payload. Your delivery setup also needs compatible browser routing and HTTPS configuration.

Test the chosen hostname and every kind of route it serves. Keep the preferred address consistent in canonical metadata, internal references, the sitemap, and feed entries. An alternate gateway can be an access route without becoming an unrelated second publication.

Make recovery independent enough to use

Consider what happens when the normal email or work account is inaccessible. Protect recovery information and make it reachable by the authorized maintainers who would actually perform a restoration. Avoid keeping the only procedure inside the affected account.

Stage domain and hosting migrations separately where practical. Preserve prior record values and retained releases, then verify resolution and delivery after each change. A successful dashboard operation is not the same as confirmed public access to the intended content.

Questions worth asking

Are DNS names and blockchain names interchangeable?

Do not assume identical browser support, administrative authority, or recovery behavior. Evaluate the actual naming system against the people and applications that must use it.

Does changing the content identifier require a new domain?

A naming layer can keep the familiar address while changing its reference. Verify the chosen system’s update process and retain the previous release for rollback.
